UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS UNDER FIRE IN 2006
Just as I was getting ready to post an article following up on Dr. Paddy Ladd’s comment that Nine University Presidents have been fired or resigned in 2006 following campus unrest, NO Confidence votes by Faculty, or financial misdealing, I discovered through DeafRead that one blogger had just followed up: TentCityUK
Therefore, I’ll just follow TentCity UK up with a brief update.
It turns out that there have been more than just these nine presidents so far in 2006 who have been removed or resigned from their positions.
Manny M. Aragon resigned as president of New Mexico Highlands University and Karl E. Burgher resigned as president of the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Louis Caldera, a son of Mexican immigrants who rose to become U.S. secretary of the Army, has resigned as president of the University of New Mexico, amid apparent friction with its Board of Regents.
Western Michigan University’s Board of Trustees in august fired Judith I. Bailey, the university’s president since June 2003, for what it called a breach of contract and unsatisfactory performance. It cited her inability to correct dipping enrollment, budget deficits, and strained relations with the faculty and the local community. ….Ms. Bailey irked faculty members in recent months. She led a plan to reduce graduate programs that sparked widespread criticism by professors and students, who argued that she had acted without adequately consulting them. The resulting squabble led to the resignation of the university’s provost.
Of particular interest to me this morning was an article about the saga that ensued at Harvard University which lead to it’s President’s resignation. For those of you who doubt the power of a united faculty’s vote of NO CONFIDENCE, read on:
“The president managed to offend professors early on by suggesting that they spend more time on scholarly work and less on outside activities that he deemed frivolous. One of his targets was Cornel West, a prominent professor of Afro-American studies, who was so offended when the president questioned the wisdom of a hip-hop recording he had made that he left for Princeton University.
In January 2005, Mr. Summers outraged professors when he publicly posited that perhaps relatively few women worked in science and mathematics because women lack the innate ability to achieve in those fields. The remarks prompted the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to pass an unprecedented no-confidence vote in his leadership last March.
Mr. Summers apologized over and over for his remarks about women, and Harvard’s seven-member governing board stood by him throughout the controversy. He acknowledges now that he had hoped to repair the damage he had done.
“I worked very hard over the last year to build bridges to meet members of the faculty partway on issues of concern, on issues of control,” Mr. Summers told reporters last week.
But Mr. Summers had ruffled faculty feathers in other ways. He suggested that professors were giving students too many A’s, and he argued that Harvard should allow military recruiters onto the campus.
Then, in January, the faculty revolted again when William C. Kirby, the respected dean of arts and sciences, resigned after being criticized by Mr. Summers for the slow pace of curriculum reform at the university. Professors protested that the resignation indicated more about the president’s mismanagement than about any problems with Mr. Kirby’s performance.
Early in February, at a meeting of the Faculty Council, professors of arts and sciences told Mr. Summers that they planned to hold another no-confidence vote later in the month. At that meeting, professors say, no one spoke in support of the president.”

Many thanks for your fab investigation!
Do you mind if we also carry a summary of your research on TentCity UK?
I feel we’re really uncovering something here.
Best wishes – TentCity UK
Do you have dates of resignations?
Caldera, Burgher & Bailey in August. Aragon in July.
i’ll be happy for you to carry a summary with a linkback. Thanks!

look at gally full of fags… gally will be sore loser … i dont like dfeaf world myself even im deaf and my family are deaf… all my life i look at deaf as boring!! why i have to be stuck being deafness and kiss your butt.. no way!! i like pse better than asl…..
Nancy Hicks – you’re either quite brazen or quite stupid for your degrading comments towards the Deaf community considering you’re from a Deaf family yourself.
Do us a favor – do refrain from making degrading comments and expel your excess energy from being angry into something productive with your life.
We actually researched the 9 universities, before drafting a letter from the UK last week, and this was included within this letter, “This year alone there have been protests leading to resignations in 9 other USA universities, including Harvard. In the UK in August 2006, South Kent College suspended their Principal after 2/3rds of the faculty and staff expressed no confidence in him.” See here.
Thank you for digging out more, and it is vital that more research is done into this and it get pushed to the top of the campaign agenda. The point cannot be missed that hearing people are allowed to show no confidence in their administration and led bottom up, yet it seems to work differently at Gallaudet, with statements detracting from the key issue.
Alison
Here’s Nancy’s response to my email. I guess she’s angry and has an issue or two.

Here’s another email from Nancy Hicks which confirmed my suspicions. She sure has issues with anger.

Nancy – if you don’t care about Gallaudet nor Deaf people, you showing a poor example of it by commenting and getting worked up about. Go and expend your energy on gardening or something.
First of all, thanks for the info that was the main subject of this thread. Good to see that there are some precedents out there.
Amazing. it never fails that someone comes along to ruin a nice conversation (or board). I had a few thoughts:
Nancy is a kid screwing around and flaming forums
Nancy is a Gallaudet protester flaming to “poke the bear”
Nancy is for real, but apparantly not very well educated or adjusted.
The first case, s/he’ll get bored and leave after a while. Second case, Not sure whatpurpose it serves, but maybe the thought is that would further agitate the situation to bring the community together. Third one, Well, we’re all entitled to our opinions, and they’re our own – neither right nor wrong. I guess I could see a point (barely) that of wanting to be looked at for oneself, rather than a person in X category. – being a wo/man, rather than a deaf/black/blind/hispanic/etc wo/man. Unfortunately that “point” if that’s what it was, was buried deep in the fertilizer.
Hawk – my guess is door #3. Nancy seems to have some issues related to something that happened to her son at Gallaudet, and was unable to obtain satisfactory resolution with the current administration. If so, her vitriol seems misplaced, doesn’t it? You’d think she’s be angry with the administration which did not respond, rather than with the protest participants who are attempting to change the status quo.
tentcityuk.wordpress.com is updated now with FIVE resigning presidents, plus brief summaries. Also we have found a big source of info on resigning presidents- will post about it tomorrow.
thanks – T
nancy- dont blame gallaudet. your son does things because HE chose to do them. i know a lot of people can verify that HE started a lot of shit when he was at gallaudet, and it was all done by HIMSELF, not gallaudet. does your son know youre embarrassing him??
and secondly, the protest is not about your son. its about jane, jordan, BoT… in the future, please refrain from commenting until you know the full story.
lastly, lay off the drugs.
thank you.
